Hideaway Bay is the domain of spectacular waterfront homes for sale in Longboat Key that pretty much reflects affluent living in a secluded island setting. It is a small community previously known as Wake Island tucked in a northeastern nook of Longboat Key off Millar Bay and opposite the three islands of Sister Keys.
The residential properties of Hideaway Bay are only accessible from Gulf of Mexico Drive via General Harris Street just north of Wake Island Road where the Longboat Key Town Public Works is located. The community’s lone access road links to the Hideaway Bay Drive, a long and winding causeway. This corridor is lined by buffers of dense mangroves and palm trees that lead into the forked Hideaway Bay interior streets.
Herb Field, one of Longboat Key’s pioneer developers and his son, Tim, take the credit for pursuing the development of Hideaway Bay. Other development projects that Herb initiated on the island include the defunct Colony Beach Resort and the Buccaneer (now Harbour Villa Club). Herb initiated in 1952 the development of the Colony, the site of which has been taken over by the new St. Regis Hotel and Residences.
The Hideaway Bay’s development is better attuned for a more long-lasting imprint in Longboat Key. Herb and his son developed the property with just 19 waterfront single family houses, with the first built in 1973.
Reflecting the stringent town regulations, especially on matters affecting the natural environment, it took six years to secure all necessary permits and satisfy various environmental requirements for the Hideaway Bay project to fully proceed. It was only till 1980 that the first property was sold in this community.
The long wait and efforts spent, however, were all worth it. Much of the natural environment in Hideaway Bay has been meticulously preserved. As a result, the community provides spectacular views not only of the bay waters but also precious sights of shorebirds and marine life that thrive in the locality’s pristine natural setting.
The privacy that Hideaway Bay offers is comparable to its residents living on their own island. Its ambiance is that of a small, quiet village, and intimate with a strong sense of community.
Most residents of Hideaway Bay stay in the neighborhood year-round. They are comprised mainly of professionals with families, retirees and semi-retired business entrepreneurs.
The homes in this community all have lush landscaping but with varying architectural designs. There are those with Spanish Mediterranean style, while others come in distinctive Tuscan and Florida contemporary renditions.
The Gulf of Mexico Drive just a short distance west of the community provides convenient access not only to the life and leisure centers of Longboat Key. The scenic drive also leads north to the lifestyle delights of Anna Maria Island that further add charm to living in Longboat Key.
